Percossa - 10 Years Off the Streets (27 Octobre 2008, Schouwburg, Leiden) by Mark Eeftens

Expectations for this 10 years anniversary show by Percossa were great. Slagwerkkrant saw their last show and that was very good. We also attended rehearsals with hans Minnaert, during which the men worked very hard for long hours. This show had to surpass all previous ones. On top of that Percossa baffled the creme de la creme of the international percussion world at the Taipei International Percussion Convention with their previous show, so Percossa's new show had to be even more special. At which they succeeded amply.
The show's opening is simply overwhelming. We see the group hovering over the stage. It's very cleverly done and we cannot reveal what is the trick here. After that many aspects of rhythm are touched upon.
I say 'rhythm' because it's not often they use regular percussive instruments. Percossa even manages to create a beautiful piece with sand. Boleadoras, spectacular body percussion and an extended version of their boom wacker-act, during which the gentlemen bludgeon each other while carelessly playing a melody...
At every instance where Percossa uses elements from their existing repertoire, it's been substantially boosted. The use of all theatrical aspects is supreme and humour is interlacing the whole show.
After intermission the number of percussion instruments increases and the sound grows bigger. Again the spectator is hardly given time to breath and taken to a thrilling finale.
Totally satisfied we leave the theatre with only one thought: this has to be one of the best percussion shows ever to hit the stage, period! It doesn't matter if you're a drummer or not. It should be obligatory in Holland to go and see.....

Percussion for laughs in delightful show Percossa by Arno Gelder

With many foreign ensembles coming to Holland, percussion concerts are becoming more and more monotonic and, frankly, boring. The pomposity of super-masculine drummers with giant drums is supposed to bring a feeling of euforia, but that trick seems to have passed its use-by date by now. The Dutch group Percossa - Niels van Hoorn, Janwillem van der Poll, René Spierings and Eric Robillard - approach percussion as a means, ot as a goal, to create their show. In "10 Years off the Streets"the four players use an enormous amount of humour to merge percussion and theatre. With Karel de Rooy (director) and Hans Minnaert (choreographer) they turned this into a jewel of a show. Clearly the four have flawless technique, timing and musicality, but all these skills are only being wielded in service of a visual en auditory spectacle for their audience. At break-neck speed Percossa invokes many atmospheres: from African rhythms, latin-swing and a Maori Haka to solid Rock, an exotic jungle with elephants and chimps and even the local Driekusman, a very witty clog dance. They also play their own bodies with virtuosity and even use lighters. For an hour and a halve Percossa prove that percussion can be especially funny. An absolute delight!
